Breaking Evil Covenants to Advance
I had a warning dream last night about spiritual covenants and contracts — an image of what harmful agreements do to hold God's people back.
I had a warning dream last night about spiritual covenants and contracts; an image of what harmful agreements do to hold God’s people back.
Many of you know we are in a harvest season; and that means many promises are being fulfilled right now. But, God is also warning us of what can hinder the alignment of the kingdom of God in greater measure in our lives. God does not leave us helpless, but He provides us with wisdom when we seek Him.
Our opinions and actions are not without spiritual consequences. When we agree with falsehood, justify sin, or persist in disobedience, we can give the enemy an opportunity to work against us. The image of “contracts” in my dream brought this warning into focus: Pay attention to what you are agreeing with! I saw this also being applied to giving to the wrong people/ministries. We need to examine our giving in this season too.
The enemy is an opportunist. We should not assume that approaching a new assignment or anticipating the fulfillment of a promise means we are beyond sabotage of that fulfillment. We must remain watchful, allowing God to expose the old patterns and contracts, with evil, that could undermine our growth.
Jesus warned Peter about sifting, but He also assured him of His prayers and spoke of his restoration:
“The Lord said, ‘Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat, but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn’t fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers.’”
— Luke 22:31–32
Old cycles can keep reemerging, bringing sabotage and defeat when these contracts are not handled with repentance and turning away. We also cannot keep nurturing what God is asking us to surrender and expect it to produce a different harvest.
“Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”
— Galatians 6:7–8
In the age of social media, there are a whole lot of opinions flying around, with people claiming those opinions are from God. Much of what I read does not reflect His Word or His character. We must examine what we say, and what we repeat before attaching the Lord’s name to it.
Coming in the Lord’s name while knowingly bearing falsehood is a serious matter. His name does not make our opinions holy. When we knowingly reject His Word while claiming His authority, we are walking in rebellion. Scripture compares rebellion to witchcraft in Samuel’s rebuke of Saul:
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”
— 1 Samuel 15:23
This is why we must learn to let our words be few. Not every thought needs to become a statement. Not every disagreement needs a public response. Sometimes wisdom means being quiet long enough to examine our own hearts, and the matter, before we speak, if we speak at all.
“Don’t be rash with your mouth, and don’t let your heart be hasty to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven, and you on earth. Therefore let your words be few.”
— Ecclesiastes 5:2
“In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.”
— Proverbs 10:19
We are seeing painful examples of people of God falling, and this is nothing to take lightly or turn into an opportunity for criticism. It is a reason to examine ourselves, learn in humility, uphold accountability, and pray that we do not fall into the same traps.
“Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.”
— Galatians 6:1
Let us take this warning Paul gave seriously without becoming fearful. Examine your agreements and actions before God. Guard your words. Repent where needed. Refuse to defend what God is exposing, and receive His correction with humility.
The answer is not fear of the enemy—it is surrender to our powerful and loving God.
“Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
— James 4:7
Thank you to my friend, Brian Keyes, for your ministry to the Lord confirming the Word He gave me this morning.
